The opposition parties in Telangana today met President Ram Nath Kovind and sought his intervention into the alleged police brutality against the Scheduled Castes in Sircilla district of the state.
The CPI leaders and members of Telangana Joint Action Committee, led by CPI MP D Raja, met the President at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan here
They submitted a memorandum requesting him to direct the state DGP to take action against the police officials who were involved in the alleged torture of Dalits.
"Dalits are being attacked in the state and police is also resorting to violence at Sircilla district. Even the NHRC notice to the state government has been ignored," Raja told PTI, adding that the delegation submitted a memorandum seeking strong action against the culprits.
Yesterday, the National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC) had also slapped notice on the state government over the alleged torture of Dalits by police.
The incident relates to arrest of eight persons last month at Nerella in the district for allegedly torching a sand -laden truck, which was involved in a road accident, causing the death of a person.
"We request you to direct the Director General of Police, Telangana State to take cognisance of the case and direct the police officials to register cases under SC/ST POA Act against the SP and the police officials who have tortured.
"Institution of an independent enquiry and provide proper compensation and protection to the victims and their family members," the memorandum said.
It also alleged that Dalits and SCs were tortured at the behest of sand-mafia contractors.
MLA and CPI state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy was also part of the delegation.
