Tairgami seeks probe into 'discrepancies' in varsity results

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of CPI(M) today urged the state government to order a probe into the "discrepancies" in the results of the undergraduate first semester students of the University of Kashmir and fix the responsibility.
This comes two days after the police fired tear smoke shells to disperse a group of female students who were protesting against Kashmir University authorities for their "mass failure" in the examinations for which results were declared last week.
"The government should immediately order a probe over the non-serious behaviour of University of Kashmir authorities, who have reportedly misplaced the answer papers of undergraduate students and have shown 100 per cent of them failing in some subjects," Senior CPI(M) leader and MLA M Y Tarigami said in a statement here.

The University of Kashmir issued the result of the undergraduate first semester, held in various degree colleges of valley, under the newly introduced scheme of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) on January 19. However, around 7000 students were deemed to have "not passed".
"It is unfortunate that the student community is being forced to come on roads to protest against the insensitive approach of the university authorities," Tarigami said and questioned the "mass failure" in one subject.
He said, the student community, which is already suffering immensely due to the prevailing situation, is justified in their protests as they have a right to seek answers from the authorities.

Tarigami rued at the use of force against the student community and termed it as "totally uncalled for and unjustified".

The CBCS was implemented for the first time in the colleges and the Optical mark recognition (OMR) answer sheets were also introduced in a first.
"There are only two OMR machines available with the university, and out of which one broke down. Now the university puts the blame on the students for not filling in the OMR sheets properly," he said.
"The fact is that many OMR sheets have not been evaluated or either misplaced, either because of the breakdown in the OMR machines or due to the negligence of concerned officials," he added.

Tarigami said the administrative staff needs to be made more accountable and responsible.
"Kashmir University authorities should deal with the issue with utmost care but instead they are trying to blame the students for the problem which is unjustified.
"If the protesting students are demanding photocopies of their answer-sheets, why is the university reluctant to give these if there is no mistake on part of the varsity authorities?" he asked.
