Noted environmentalist Sunder Lal Bahuguna today asked Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat to take effective steps to address the problems faced by people displaced by the Tehri dam.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, the Chipko Movement leader described himself as one of the victims of the mega project who had suffered the pangs of displacement and urged the chief minister to give top priority to resolution of the problems.
"People displaced by the Tehri dam have placed their problems before you even in the past but nothing concrete has been done as yet for them.
I request you to kindly accord top priority to resolving their problems as I am myself one of the victims of the project and understand the pains of the displaced very well," he said in his letter to the chief minister.
People displaced by the project are demanding speedy resolution of the problems linked with their rehabilitation.
They are demanding that basic amenities be provided to the Tehri dam displaced living in identified areas in Dehradun and transfer of rehabilitation director's charge currently held by Tehri District Magistrate to another IAS officer.
They are also demanding 30 per cent reservation for the wards of the displaced in Tehri-based Hydro Power Engineering college.
