Tech developed by scientists to tackle pollution to be showcased in global meets: Vardhan

Innovative technologies developed by Indian scientists to tackle pollution will be showcased at the Asia Ministerial meet in Singapore and the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Wednesday.

The minister held a meeting with Head of UN Environment Erik Solheim here and appraised him of development of technologies by Indian scientists to address environmental degradation, including bio-diesel from plastic waste among others.

On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented the UN's Champions of the Earth Award by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the minister said that as Gujarat Chief Minister, Modi had brought global warming and climate change to the centre stage of national politics and he deserved the award.

"India would showcase innovative technologies developed by our scientists to address pollution at Asia Ministerial in Singapore in Jan & 4th #EnvironmentAssembly in Nairobi in March2019. @ErikSolheim promised to promote #GreenGoodDeeds from @UNEnvironment platform as well," the minister tweeted.

Earlier this year, Harsh Vardhan had launched the nationwide social movement 'Green Good Deeds' to protect the environment and promote healthy living.

The environment minister had drawn up a list of over 500 green good deeds and asked people to alter their behaviour to green good behaviour to fulfil their green social responsibility.

"Had a bilateral meeting with @UNEnvironment chief @ErikSolheim & discussed the way forward on various env. issues. Told him, our scientists have developed several technologies to address env. degradation, like biodiesel from plastic waste, biofuel from sewage," he tweeted.

Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron were jointly awarded the UN's highest environmental honour for their pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance and promoting new areas of cooperation on environmental action, according to a statement from the United Nations Environment Programme.
