Gujarat's "best practices" pertaining to counselling for women in distress are set to be replicated in Telangana, where Kerala's "She Taxi" system is also proposed to hit the roads.
Sunil Sharma, Telangana's Secretary, Women, Children, Disabled & Senior Citizens (Schemes) Department, recently went to Gujarat and studied the "Gender Resource Centre" which is running successfully in the BJP-ruled Western State.
He also studied the '181' helpline which provides counselling for women in distress, and the concept of "One Stop Crisis Centre".
Sharma visited Gujarat after the second meeting of the Committee to deliberate various issues relating to safety and security of girls and women in Telangana. At the meeting, it was decided to send a team to Gujarat (headed by Sharma) and another led by Sowmya Misra, Home Secretary, to Kerala to study "She Taxi" system run by women drivers.
Today, in the third meeting of the committee, of which Poonam Malakondiah is the Chairperson, these "best practices" of Gujarat and the Kerala taxi system were discussed in detail and it was decided to implement them in the newly carved out State, an official statement said here today.
Discussions were also held on effective implementation of Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostics Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994, and regarding safety of women and girls while travelling, particularly during night time, it said.
