TGBL, Unilever working on sustainable tea production

Tata Global Beverages (TGBL) and Hindustan Unilever both are working on various programmes alongwith Tea board to improve sustainability of tea cultivation and production.
Tata Group's companies working on the project Sustainable Plant Protection Formulation (SPPF) to develop the ecological solutions for plant protection in tea. The project is an initiative between three group companies Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages and Rallis, according to a statement released today.
While Unilever's has commissioned an inter-governmental, not-for-profit organisation focused on improving people's lives by applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment.
"Tata Global Beverages and Hindustan Unilever are committed to working closely with the Tea Board of India and Tea Research Institute on these initiatives and sharing the learning with the broader industry body," the relase added.
Meanwhile, the Tea Board has also initiated several efforts, working with tea research institutes, private industry, and international certification bodies to develop programmes that are founded on the sustainable use of plant protection products, harvesting and packaging processes.
Tea Board of India, Chairman Siddharth said, "The Tea Board of India is committed to providing safe and quality teas to consumers. We work closely with stakeholders in promoting sustainable agronomic practices in line with global best practices."
Recently, in a study undertaken by environmental NGO Greenpeace over a year has allegedly found the presence of harmful pesticide residues in tea sold by leading brands across India.
