Cult classic sci-fi movie "The Last Starfighter" is all set to get a TV spin-off with virtual reality scenes.
The original 1984 film's screenwriter Jonathan R Betuel is teaming with virtual reality company Surreal to turn it into the first-ever virtual reality television series, reported Variety.
Director Nick Castle's cult classic film followed a teenage boy (Lance Guest) as he joined with an alien army in an intergalactic war.
"The Last Starfighter" made history as one of the first movies to use extensive CGI in 1984, and now it could be on the cutting edge of technology again.
In a new story focused on an alien police force, some scenes in "The Last Starfighter" TV show will break the traditional television frame to expand for viewers using virtual reality devices.
"It's a very interesting blend. The other-worldiness of it lends itself to VR," the writer said.
No network is yet attached to the project, although Betuel has revealed that talks are underway with several potential broadcasters.
A reboot for the cult classic has long been in development, with Seth Rogen and Steven Spielberg among the heavy-hitters linked to the project over the years.
