Congress today latched on to Varun Gandhi's praise of his estranged cousin Rahul Gandhi to shower encomiums on the party Vice President saying it is natural that those who do good work get bouquets.
Party spokesman Anand Sharma also utilised the occasion to attack BJP candidate from Amethi Smriti Irani noting that she had lost from Chandni Chowk seat by more than two lakh votes but "perhaps her memory is weak".
"When a warrior goes to the battlefield, he tries to win ... And I will also win this battle," Irani had yesterday said when asked how she felt on being pitted against Rahul, who is the sitting MP from Amethi.
At the AICC briefing, the Union Minister was seen to be more than agreeing with Varun's praise of Rahul, which had left BJP embarrassed.
Varun praised Rahul and the Congress leader quickly lapped up the praise causing embarrassment to BJP after which he changed tack and said it should not be seen as an endorsement of any political party or candidate.
Varun, who is the BJP's youth face in Uttar Pradesh, created a flutter when he said Rahul is doing good work through his self-help groups for ameliorating the status of women in his parliamentary constituency Amethi and added he would like to do the same in Sultanpur district.
