Thousands of fish were found dead in stagnant water in a barrage across river Cauvery near here today, officials said.

Locals and the electricity department officials of a hydro-electric project in the area noticed the fish floating in the barrage at Vendipalayam this afternoon.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and the local officials sent water sample for test.

The dead fish were later buried in pits, officials said.

Only yesterday, a large number of fish were found dead in Cauvery near Chekkanur village in Salem district.
