Three injured in mob attack over Ambedkar anniversary event

Three persons, including a local politician, were injured when they were allegedly attacked by a mob here over an event organised to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, police said today.
The incident took place last night in the Kokani Pada locality, Police PRO Gajanan Kabdule said.
The injured persons, including Sunil Khambe, a local politician, were part of the event organisers. The trouble started when members of Vana Hakka Parishad (a forest rights outfit) objected to the celerbrations being held on a public ground in the area, he said.
Soon a mob assembled and smashed the car of Khambe, who was with the BSP till recently and prior to that associated with the RPI, police said.
The mob, comprising local residents, attacked Khambe and two others accompanying him with bamboos and stones, leaving them injured, they said.
The two other victims were identifed as Babasaheb Ovhal and Deepak Pawar, police said, adding all three were admitted to a local hospital.
The irate crowd also uprooted a board and a flag put up for the function, according to a complaint filed with the Kapurbawdi Police Station.
After the attack, tension prevailed in the locality, where senior police officials are camping to ovesee law and order situation.
Ten people who were part of the riotous mob have been identified, police said.
Offences under relevant sections of IPC and Bombay Police Act related to rioting and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerious weapons means, among others, were registered in connection with the incident.
No arrest has been made so far, police added.
