A number of tin-roofed shops were gutted and some damaged in a fire in Newtown area in the early hours today, Fire Brigade sources said.
The flames, which partially or completely damaged 25 shops, were first noticed at 2.30 am.
No injury or casualty was reported as the small shops were closed at that time, the sources said.
Three fire tenders were pressed into service to extinguish the flames.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
The shops were located near a bridge at Mahishbathan under New Town police station limits in North 24 Parganas district.
