The ruling Trinamool Congress today asked the people of West Bengal to "foil" the September two nation wide strike called by several central trade unions including the Leftist trade unions - AITUC and CITU.
"The CPI(M) and Left Front during its 34 year-old rule had pushed state backwards with its militant trade unionism. Now when the state is moving fast on the path of development, they are trying to stop it either by violence or through shutdowns," Senior TMC leader and state Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee told reporters.
"They (Left) have ruined the state by goondaism during their 34-year-rule in the state. Now they are again trying to take up goondaism to halt the state's growth," Mukherjee said.
The September two country-wide strike call was given by 11 central trade unions to protest against the proposed changes in various labour laws. But the BJP-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) later pulled out of the proposed nationwide strike.
Left trade union CITU had yesterday warned West Bengal government against attempts by the administration to thwart the nation-wide strike the day and said if the state is imposing a war on the people then the people will be ready to give TMC a befitting reply.
"What kind of war are they taking about? The goondaism that they had let loose few days back on the streets of Kolkata by attacking police (the march to the secretariat by Leftists on August 27)? We believe in peaceful agitation and taking along the masses with us," Mukherjee said
The West Bengal government today made it mandatory for all its employees to be present in office on September 2 and announced that all government offices, including those provided with grant-in-aid, would remain open and no leave would be granted on that day.
