A Sub-divisional Magistrate's court awarded 14 days judicial custody to Chatterjee and two of his associates, Md. Nasim and Sidhu Kundu.
Chatterjee was arrested on July 12 from the city's satellite township, Bidhannagar, after a complaint that he demanded Rs. 12 lakh as extortion money from an area resident for house construction, a police officer said.
He has been charged with extortion under several sections of IPC, including 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion).
