Police said the gruesome incident took place last night and a bloodstained spade, shovel and axe were found near the body of the 54-year-old Barun Karmakar, the TMC block president of Upper Bagdogra.
Quoting the complaint filed by Karmakar's family this morning, the police said three men had come to visit him last night at around 9 pm and was in the room with him for some time.
As there was no sound from inside the room for quite sometime, Karmakar's wife, who was the only person at home at the time, pushed open the door and found him lying in a pool of blood hacked to death.
North Bengal Development Minister Goutam Deb visited Karmakar's residence today.
Siliguri police commissioner Jagmohan said the investigations into the killing were handed over to the detective department.
