Gupta, who was earlier this month elected to the Upper House following the resignation of actor Mithun Chakraborty, took oath in Bengali.
The House also mourned the death of its former member Pyarimohan Mohapatra on March 19 at the age of 77 years.
When the House met for the day, Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned of the death of Mohapatra, who was member of the Upper House for two terms from July 2004 to July 2010 and July 2010 to July 2016.
"In passing away of Pyarimohan Mohapatra, the country has lost a noted civil servant, a distinguished parliamentarians and a dedicated social worker," Ansari said in his obituary reference.
