Tamil Nadu Assembly today condoled the death of last month's flood victims, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, CPI stalwart A B Bardhan and veteran actress Manorama.
Separate condolence messages were read out by the Speaker P Dhanapal following which the House paid silent tribute to the departed souls.
The House expressed sympathies with the families of victims of last month's deluge in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore following torrential rains even as Dhanapal hailed the swift response of the state government and its post-rain initiatives to put life back on track.
Over 450 persons had been killed in various rain-related incidents across the state during the north-east monsoon which set in October last.
On the death of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, the Speaker said the House expressed "shock and deep grief".
Recalling Sayeed's tenures as Central Minister (1986, 1989) and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir between 2002-2005 and since March 2015, Dhanapal said the PDP leader had performed efficiently.
The House expressed its sympathies with Sayeed's bereaved family and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The House also hailed Bardhan's service to the poor and recalled his dedication for the cause of people.
Expressing grief over the 92-year-old leader's death, the members expressed their sympathies with CPI and his family.
The Assembly also paid rich tributes to Manorama, recipient of many awards including the Padma Shri, and recalled that she had acted in over 1,300 films, appearing with actors spanning generations.
Her death was an "irreparable loss," to the Tamil cinema industry, it added.
Obituary references were also made to 11 former MLAs.
