With reservoirs that feed the city rapidly nearing their full capacity, aided by copious rainfall, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today ordered supply of 830 Million Litres of Water a Day to residents of the state capital, up from the present 535 MLD.
"I have ordered supply of 830 MLD of water every day for Chennai city. Due to this, the necessary drinking water will be supplied to the people everyday," she said.
As of now 9,053 million cubic feet of water is available in the reservoirs that quench Chennai city, she said in a statement here.
Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarambakkam reservoirs supply drinking water to the city and their combined full storage level is 11,057 mcft.
On the same day last year the combined storage was only 2,946 mcft.
Also, the New Veeranam Scheme, two desalination plants and hired farm wells in Tiruvallur District too cater to the needs of Chennai.
"Based on the storage in reservoirs here, supplies from two desalination plants and inflow from New Veeranam (Tank) Scheme-I have ordered supply of 830 MLD to Chennai city," she said.
Suburban Avadi, Ambattur, Ullagaram, and Puzhuthivakkam too would get piped water supply as work to provide drinking water is complete, she added.
