Seeking to help the micro and small dyeing units, several of which were forced to close due to lack of effluent treatment facilities, Tamil Nadu government today announced setting up of an Industry-oriented Development Cluster at an outlay of Rs 700 crore.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said around 900 micro and small dyeing units located in Namakkal, Erode, Salem and Karur Districts were providing direct employment to thousands of people and indirect jobs to lakhs.
While medium and large dyeing units have installed zero effluent technology in their facilities, in line with the changing environment laws in the state, the micro and small units were unable to implement such projects and faced closure.
Under the proposed project, these units would be relocated and the cluster set up. This would help over 10,000 people in getting direct employment besides one lakh indirect jobs in the textile industry.
Observing that the outlay for the cluster was Rs 700 crore, she said most of the funds would be diverted from various central government projects, the rest of the expenditure would be borne by her government.
The project would be implemented within next three years by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), Small Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company (TWIC) and Handlooms Department.
