TN not to allow sale of steel products without BIS certificate

Tamil Nadu government today told the Madras High Court that it will not allow sale of steel products, made in the country or imported, without the quality test certificate issued by Bureau of Indian Standards.
Special Government Pleader Sanjay Gandhi submitted the State Industries Department "will not hesitate to take action as per the provisions of Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order 2012, if any steel products sold in Tamil Nadu is found to be substandard."
A petition was filed by Madras Steel Re-rollers Association seeking a direction from the Court to the central and state governments to perform their statutory duty by ensuring that no deformed steel bars that are over eight mm in diameter are imported, stored, sold or used in India irrespective of Indian Trade Clarification, based on Harmonized System of Coding, which is an international nomenclature for classification of products.

Gandhi submitted though it is the responsibility of the government of India to create awareness about the notification of Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) order 2012, which specifically spells out that the manufacturers and dealers of steel products shall not sell the products without BIS certificate, Tamil Nadu government will not in any way allow either import or indigenous manufacturers and sellers to float norms.
After the clarification of the Special Government Pleader, Justice V Ramasubramanian posted the matter for further hearing to December five.
