Tomato prices have witnessed a steep fall in the past two weeks in Punjab and Haryana owing to bulk supplies in the markets.

However, prices of most vegetables continued to remain stable across both the states, including Chandigarh.

The prices of most vegetables, including onion, potato, peas, pumpkin, beans, carrots and spinach, have remained largely unchanged during the past fortnight, traders said today.

Tomato prices have registered a steep fall from last month's Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg in retail to Rs 7-15 per kg during the past two weeks, they said.

Farmers in Punjab, Haryana and at some other places had planted tomatoes in large numbers this season and prices have crashed as bulk supplies were reaching the markets, traders said.

Farmers claim that prices of tomato in the wholesale markets were fetching them mere Rs 2-3 per kg.

According to traders, prices of other commonly consumed vegetables too remained unchanged including capsicum, bottle gourd, bitter gourd and cucumber.

Lemon prices, however, have registered an increase, from Rs 60-Rs 80 per kg last month to Rs 100-Rs 120 per kg now.
