Tony Gilroy to tackle Diego Luna's 'Star Wars' spin-off series

Writer-director Tony Gilroy has been roped to pen the upcoming "Star Wars" spin-off series, based around Diego Luna's "Rogue One" character Cassian Andor.

The show, which will debut on Disney+, will follow Andor's adventures as a rebel spy during the formative years of the Rebellion, before the events of "A New Hope".

Gilroy will pen the pilot script and also helm episodes of the series, reported Variety. He is best known for writing and directing the Oscar-nominated feature "Michael Clayton".

The filmmaker has prior experience in the galaxy far, far away as he worked extensively on 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" which served as the prequel to George Lucas' "A New Hope".

Though he was given a screenplay credit, Gilroy was involved in the film's reshoots, including the ending, as well as the post-production process.

Besides Luna, actor Alan Tudyk is also set to reprise his character of K-2SO, Andor's droid sidekick.

Stephen Schiff, the producer of "The Americans", will be the showrunner of the series.
