Avtar Singh, a resident of Jassowal village in Hoshiarpur district, duped Amrik Singh of Rs 18.5 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada, police said today.
According to the complaint by Harjinder Kaur, mother of Amrik and a resident of nearby Palahi village, the amount was paid to the agent in three instalments in November, 2009.
The complainant alleged that the agent refused to return the money.
A case under Section 420 (cheating) of IPC and relevant sections of Immigration Act has been registered against the agent, police said.
