The roadside bombing targeted Malik Abdul Hakeem when he was travelling in a vehicle through Bajaur agency.
The remote controlled bomb exploded close to the vehicle and the tribal elder escaped unhurt.
Security forces immediately rushed to the blast site and started a search operation after cordoning off the area.
Attacks on tribal elders are frequent in the restive northwest tribal region.
In May, an influential pro-government tribal elder, Malik Qader Khan, and his two guards were killed in an attack near Miranshah.
