"Game of Thrones" star Natalie Dormer has revealed that she decided to write a film because there is a lack of "fleshed out" characters for women.

The 36-year-old actor, who played Margaery Tyrell in HBO's epic fantasy series, also said she was tired of working in period dramas.

Before "GOT", Dormer garnered widespread praise for playing Anne Boleyn on "The Tudors". She also portrayed Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Duchess of York in Madonna's "W.E." in 2011.

In 2015, she penned her first film, "In Darkness", with her partner and director Anthony Byrne. Dormer also features in the film, which released last month.

"I had no desire to get into a corset again. Why I started writing 'In Darkness' was because there was a dearth, as I saw it, of three-dimensional, fleshed out, anti-heroines - you know, flawed female roles," she told Radio Times magazine.

The actor said she had noticed a change in the film environment with respect to female roles.

"It's not as quick as we would all like it to be, of course it's not, but I'd rather lean into the positive," she added.

Dormer revealed she had wanted to team up with Byrne for a while because she found him good at his work. They first met met in Dublin while filming "The Tudors" in 2007.

"We've always made a point of visiting each other's sets and watching each other work. I wanted to make 'In Darkness' with him because I'd watched him for years and I was jealous of the other actors," she said.

"I was like, 'He's a really great director. And I can only assume he thought I was alright as an actress or he wouldn't have employed me," she added.
