The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two people in Pune with fake currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination, an official said today.
The Mumbai Branch of the NIA had received a tip-off that Dalim Mia, resident of Malda in West Bengal, had come to Pune to distribute counterfeit currency notes, the official said.
Mia allegedly supplied fake currency notes in Maharashtra, Karnataka and other parts of India, he said.
NIA sleuths intercepted him in Pune last night with the help of local police, the official said.
His questioning led to the arrest of Ashok Kumbar, resident of Chikkodi in Karnataka, in the city and the seizure of fake currency with face value of Rs 82,000.
The seized notes were of good quality and it would be difficult for ordinary people to notice that they were fake, the official said, adding that it was suspected that the notes were printed and smuggled into India from across the border. Further probe is on.
