Two Bhiwandi men convicted in counterfeit currency case

A district court here on Thursday convicted and sentenced two persons from Maharashtra's Bhiwandi town for printing and circulating counterfeit currency.

While district judge D G Murumkar sentenced Janardan Trimbak Divekar (29) to four years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 1,000, Nilesh Sharad Dabhade (32) was awarded three years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000.

Additional public prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar told the court that on January 9, 2016, officials of theCentral Crime Unit had nabbed Divekar and seized fake Rs 1,000 notes to the tune of Rs 1,50,000 from him.

On interrogation, the accused informed the police that he had procured the counterfeit notes from Dabhade who owned a mobile shop, following which the latter was arrested for printing and circulating the notes, she said.

The police seized counterfeit notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 100 denominations worth Rs 47,300, Moholkar added.

Divekar and Dabhade have been convicted under sections 489B (whoever sells to, buys or receives counterfeit currency) and 489C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes) of the Indian Penal Code.
