The girls Meena and Angaleeswari, both aged 19, were passing through Perumal Kovil street on the way to bus stand after their classes when the man threw acid on them and fled the scene, IG of Police Abhay Kumar Singh told reporters.
While the target of the man seemed to be Meena, who suffered serious burns on her face and body, Angaleeswari sustained burns on her body when she tried to protect her friend from the attack, he said.
Later the police official told PTI, quoting some eye witness, that the man would be around 35 years. The motive behind the attack was not known immediately.
Singh and SP Vijendra Bidari are camping at Tirumangalam and holding inquiry.
The girls were provided first aid at the Tirumangalam Government Hospital and later shifted to Government Rajaji hospital here.
