The incident happened when workers of the sanitation department were cleaning a drain with a JCB machine. The PNG pipeline runs near this drain, they said.
The injured have been identified as Sohraj (72) and Santo (62), who reside in one of the temporary hutments nearby.
"When the work of cleaning of drain was being carried out, the PNG pipeline got damaged and started leaking. As Santo was making food in her shanty, the leaking pipeline caught fire, gutting three shanties.
He added that after repairing the damaged pipeline, the gas supply, which was stopped in the area, was made normal.
