Two persons, including a woman, today sustained burn injuries in an explosion following leakage in an underground Piped Natural Gas (PNG) pipeline in Nandgram area, police said.
The incident happened when workers of the sanitation department were cleaning a drain with a JCB machine. The PNG pipeline runs near this drain, they said.
The injured have been identified as Sohraj (72) and Santo (62), who reside in one of the temporary hutments nearby.
"When the work of cleaning of drain was being carried out, the PNG pipeline got damaged and started leaking. As Santo was making food in her shanty, the leaking pipeline caught fire, gutting three shanties.
"Santo and her husband Sohraj were also injured in the incident," station officer of Siyani Gate police station, Pramod Gautam, said.
He added that after repairing the damaged pipeline, the gas supply, which was stopped in the area, was made normal.
