Maharashtra government today informed the Bombay High Court that it had appointed two officers to assist the investigating officer who is conducting 'open inquiry' against the former NCP minister Vijaykumar Gavit and his family in a disproportionate assets case.
This was done in keeping with the High Court's suggestion to expedite the probe, it told the division bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka.
The bench today asked the Income Tax department to complete its separate probe and file a report by March 31. The department has reopened the assessment of Gavit and his family since 2007-08 under the Income Tax Act and the Wealth Tax Act.
On the last occasion, the court was angry with state anti-corruption bureau for delay in conducting open inquiry against Gavit and his family.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by V R Musale seeking prosecution of Gavit and his family for allegedly accumulating assets disproportionate to known source of income.
