The Under-16 football team today recorded a rare win in an international tournament but coach Goutam Ghosh is not a satisfied man as he dreams of watching his side beat top European teams in future.
India beat Nepal 1-0 in a gripping final of the SAFF Under-16 championship summit clash, breaking hearts of thousands of Nepali fans.
"I am not satisfied. I would be satisfied when India will beat Italy, France - the European teams. We have played the game hard, supposed to win. It is our first success and credit goes to boys for their work," Ghosh said after the match.
Ghosh, who has been guiding the side since September 2012, said poor conditions coupled with rain forced them to play with a different strategy today.
"It was not a good pitch for a good game. It was so slippery and controlling the ball was difficult. Considering the conditions, we had practiced short passing. You had to do that in a match like this," he said.
Ghosh also said that they have a long road to walk and in the process he wants his wards to not only excel on a football pitch but also in life.
"We need to improve. We win or lose, it is immaterial, the idea is to develop the side. We have to develop them (players) not as football players but also good human beings. Everybody cannot be a superstar but can be gentleman," he said after instructing his players to not waste energy drinks, scattered on the ground, as they were "costly".
Jerry Lalrinzuala, the only scorer of the match, felt proud after striking the winning goal.
"I am very happy today. This was the best match of the tournament," he said.
Ghosh said his team will enjoy for sometime and then start training for Under-16 AFC Cup qualifiers to be held in September in Kuwait.
