Sanitation workers in Uttarakhand ended their 11-day-old strike late last night after some of their demands, including increase in wages, were conceded by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.

The chief minister last night held a meeting with representatives of the Safai Karamchari Sangathan and resolved the crisis, an official release said here.

He agreed to their demands of Rs 275 as daily wage to safai karamcharis of Swachchata Samitis in Uttarakhand and reinstatement of sanitation workers who were ousted from work during the strike, it said.

The meeting came amid growing clamour by the opposition over mounds of uncleared garbage on streets here due to the strike.

Thanking the chief minister for conceding their demands, the sangathan ended their strike, the release said.

President Akhil Bharatiya Majdoor Safai Karmachari Sangh Rajesh Kumar and former president Safai Karmachari Ayog Bhagwat Prasad Makwana attended the meeting.

Taking up the issue with Governor K K Paul, Uttarakhand Congress president Pritam Singh on Wednesday sought his intervention to end the strike.
