The hotel owner, Vijayendra Bhat, was driving his car when the two men riding a motorcycle fired at him and the bullet smashed the window pane of the vehicle.
Fearing further attack, Vijayendra ran into the hotel but the two fled from the spot.
It is said that three days ago Vijayendra had allegedly received a call from an underworld don demanding 'hafta' (protection money) but he had ignored it.
A case has been registered, police said.
