Six persons were allegedly duped to the tune of nearly Rs 1.16 crore by a Uttar Pradesh based mining company, police said today.
Six persons from Thane and suburbs had invested in the range of Rs 10-45 lakh in the company named SLK Mines in May 2012, which they said operated from Uttar Pradesh and had invited deposits from public, they said.
The company promised an interest of Rs 6,000-7,000 per month to the six persons, Naupada police station inspector D B Pagare said.
According to the complaint filed by Javed Kasmani, Hermajit Saini, Shamsuddin Shaikh yesterday, they received the money (interest sum) initially for two-three months in 2012 but it stopped thereafter, the officer said, adding, the victims later enquired with the company but in vain.
Pagare said only three persons lodged the complaint as the remaining three are their relatives.
The company managing director's name was given as Qasim Qureshi Ansari and the two company agent names in Mumbai as Yusuf Siddiqui and Wasim Shaikh, both residents of Mumbra here, he said.
According to police, Kasmani from Rabodi in Thane paid Rs 26 lakh, while Saini and Shaikh invested Rs 47 lakh and 35 lakh, respectively.
A case has been registered in this regard under IPC section 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) and no arrest has been made so far.
Police is investigating if the company was fake and and efforts were on to nab the accused, police said.
