Seema Jain, Director Census, Punjab, said Ludhiana, the most urbanised district of Punjab, alone accounted for one-fifth of the total urban population of the state.
Every fifth urban dweller in Punjab resides in Ludhiana district, she said.
SAS Nagar is the second most urbanised district in the state leaving behind Amritsar and Jalandhar at second and third spots respectively.
Even the least urbanised Punjab district is more urbanised than the overall urbanisation level of Bihar and Himachal Pradesh, Jain said.
In Punjab, 62.51 per cent of the population is rural and 37.49 per cent is urban. The state accounts for 2.75 per cent of India's urban population.
During 2001-11, urban population in Punjab has increased by 25.72 per cent, the Census official said.
