A package containing radioactive material has been missing for more than 10 days and a US university is urgently appealing for help in tracking it down, a report said.
Texas A&M University was quoted by local broadcaster KBTX as saying Monday that the missing FedEx shipment contains a "radioactive source for research purposes" and doesn't pose a risk -- as long as the contents are not disturbed.
The package was shipped to the Texas A&M Radiation Safety Office but the university was "confident" it had not been received, according to a university statement quoted by KBTX.
"We obviously want to locate this package as quickly as possible because it does contain radioactive material, but we hasten to add it doesn't present a health threat to the community provided the contents, which are secured in a box with two layers of inner containment, are not disturbed," it said.
KBTX, referencing an internal email from an assistant vice president with the Office of Safety and Security at the university, reported that FedEx records show the package had been delivered and signed for on August 21.
Again referencing the email, it reported that the package had "left from Edina, Minnesota and the Science Engineering and Education Company."
Attempts to reach the company by phone and email were unsuccessful.
FedEx also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
