Utkal Alumina International Ltd (UAIL), an Aditya Birla Group company, has launched a Computer Literacy Project in Odisha's tribal -dominated Rayagada district as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Utkal Alumina Jana Seva Trust, an organisation promoted by the company for taking forward its peripheral development initiatives, has collaborated with Odisha Knowledge Corporation Ltd (OKCL), to serve as an Authorised Learning Centre (ALC) of OKCL and offer the Odisha State Certificate on Information Technology (OS-CIT) course at a subsidised fee.
"Utkal Alumina has a multitude of initiatives to ensure the welfare of communities living in proximity to their project area. Continuing its efforts towards inclusive development, we have launched this initiative which is helping the local community develop their computer skills", said Vijay Sapra, Unit Head, UAIL.
This project, launched at Nuapada in Kashipur block of the backward district, will also help supplement the Digital India initiative, he said.
Lisa Mohanty, a young housewife from Tikiri Village in Kashipur Block, who took the OS-CIT course through UAIL-run ALC, expressed gratitude to the initiative, saying it has immensely helped people like her be market-ready. "I can now secure a well-paying job and support my family", she added.
L N Padhi, the Lead Coordinator of District Lead Centre of OKCL, welcomed the initiative, adding that UAIL should expand the programme to other locations so that it can reach and benefit maximum people.
UAIL's reaches out to the marginalised and underprivileged section of the society through its various CSR interventions in the area of health care, education, sustainable livelihood, infrastructure, and social reform, company officials said.
