Sources in Law Ministry said the notificatioon was issued after President Pratibha Patil cleared the file.

The proposal was sent to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in April.

Since it is a Constitutional post, the proposal was cleared by the President.

Vahanvati was appointed as the country's top law officer on June 8, 2009, and his current term ends on June 7, 2012.

Earlier, there were talks to give him a fresh 3-year tenure but now his new term will be co-terminus with the tenure of the UPA 2 government in 2014.

He is the first Muslim to hold the post of Attorney General. He had been the Advocate-General of Maharashtra from December 1999 to June 2004 and represented the state in the public interest litigation petition filed in the fake stamp paper scam.

Most of the law officers were appointed between June and August, 2009, after the UPA returned to power in May of that year. PTI NAB
