Expressing solidarity with the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, VCs of seven state universities of West Bengal today stopped short of condemning the police action on the students last week.
"We, the VCs of state universities express concern about the prevailing situation in Jadavpur University. We appeal to all stake holders especially the student community to maintain peace and calm in the university campus," Ranjan Chakraborti, VC of Vidyasagar University, said.
Chakraborti, along with VCs of Burdwan University, WBUT, North Bengal University, Kazi Nazrul University, Sidhu Kanu University, Kalyani University today addressed a press conference to express solidarity with JU VC Abhijit Chakraborty who was gheraoed by the students past midnight last Tuesday.
"We are deeply pained to notice that the students resorted to gherao till past midnight when things could have been sorted out through discussions," Chakraborti said.
When the VC's were asked do they condemn the police action on the innocent students inside the campus, Chakrabarti along with other VC's were short of answers.
"You all have to understand under which circumstances the police were called in. Nobody has the right to gherao the VC and curb his fundamental right. What would have happened if something untoward had happened. The VC is aged and a noted academician," Ratan Lal Hangloo, VC of Kalyani University, said.
