"Peethasheewar Mauni Mahraj, 35 to 40 sadhus and about 500 others were placed under house arrest in his Gauriganj situated ashram this morning," Assistant Superintendent of Police P Munna Lal said.
The administration had told Mauni Mahraj that he would not be allowed to leave the ashram when he announced yesterday that he would be going to Ayodhya, the ASP said.

Meanwhile, sources in the ashram said that Mauni Mahraj has started a fast unto death in protest against the denial of permission to proceed to Ayodhya.
