Haryana government has decided to let women with visual disability unfurl the national flag on Republic Day next year as "chief guest", a move aimed at empowering women through gender sensitisation.
The state government has decided that during the Republic Day functions on January 26, the honour to unfurl the national flag as chief guest will be bestowed upon a woman, or a girl, who is a resident of the respective village or city and is visually disabled, officials said today.
The directive is to be followed in all educational institutions, villages and cities, they said.
The chief secretary issued a circular in this regard to all Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners in the state.
In case no visually-disabled women or girl is available, the "chief guest" then should be a woman or a girl with more than 70 per cent disability, said an official release.
The move is likely to help sensitise people about gender inequality and raise awareness on women empowerment.
