'Water storage position in reservoirs better than last year'

The water storage position in 91 important reservoirs in the country was better as compared with the corresponding period of last year.
According to an official statement, the water storage available in 91 important reservoirs of the country as on July 23 (rpt July 23) was 58.96 BCM which is 37 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
It is 115 per cent of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 108 per cent of storage of average of last ten years.
"The present storage position during current year is better than the storage position of last year and is also better than the storage of average of last ten years," the statement said.
The water storage levels in western region, comprising Gujarat and Maharashtra, has equalled the last year's position, it was less when compared with the average storage during corresponding period of last 10 years.
There are 27 reservoirs in this region having total storage capacity of 27.07 BCM and the total storage available in these reservoirs is 6.63 BCM, which is 24 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
The storage during corresponding period of last year was 24 per cent and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 37 per cent of storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is equal to the storage of last year but is less than the average storage of last ten years, the statement added.
Similarly, the water storage levels in 31 reservoirs located in the southern region during the current year is better than the corresponding period of last year but is less than the average storage of corresponding period of the last ten years, it said.
States having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period are Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana (two combined project in both states), it added.
Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are having better storage than last year for the corresponding period, it said.
