Taking a serious note of the death of a SFI leader while he was being taken to the jail after arrest, the West Bengal Human Rights Commission today initiated a probe and also directed the Kolkata Police to investigate and submit a separate report within a week.
"We have taken suo motu cognisance of the student's death and asked for a report from the Commissioner of Kolkata Police within a week," WBHRC chairman Justice (retd) Ashok Ganguly said here.
"We are also sending our additional director general of police and the Commission's registrar for a separate inquiry by the HRC," he said adding that they will also submit their report within a week.
Action will be contemplated only after receiving and studying the reports, Justice Ganguly said.
Suditpo Gupta, a 22-year-old SFI leader and a MA student of the Rabindra Bharati University was arrested yesterday during a rally and law violation programme to demand holding of union elections.
He fell from a bus and his head hit a lamp post, when he and other arrested SFI members were being taken to the Presidency Jail.
While the SFI and CPI(M) alleged that Gupta died of injuries sustained in a lathicharge by the police, Joint Commissioner (Hqs) of Kolkata Police Jawed Shamim maintained that he died in an accident.
Gupta was taken to state-run SSKM Hospital with serious head injuries, where he died last evening.
