A weighbridge in the outskirts of Jammu city has been sealed by authorities after it was found to be "defective", officials said.
Acting on complaints from coal transporters plying in the state, the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) yesterday checked the weighbridge at Purkho and found it to be "faulty" , a senior official of the LMD said.
According to truck drivers, there was a discrepancy in the weight shown at the weighbridge, with measurements showing less weight to the tune of "250 kgs" against the total of 9 tonnes, the official said.
The drivers got their supplies weighed at an inter-state toll plaza at Lakhanpur in Kathua district and obtained the weight slip, he said, adding, when they got the weighing done again at the other end, the weighbridge displayed less weight, as a result of which the transporters suffered losses for short supplies.
A team of inspectors comprising Pooja Kumari and Rohit Sharma checked the accuracy of the weighbridge using laboratory equipments fitted with mobile weighbridge testingkit and found that it showed "erratic weight" with "linearity defects" as the weighment reached beyond the level of 4 tonnes, he said.
The operations at the weighbridge were immediately stopped and the indicator was seized to verify the reasons for erratic readings in weighment, he added.
