In a bid to curb the tendency to destroy public and private properties during riots, unrest or violent political movements, the Assembly today passed The West Bengal Maintenance of Public order (amendment) Bill 2017, amid walkout by opposition Congress and CPI(M) MLAs.
The Bill stipulates that those who will commit incidents of burning, looting and damage of properties will be liable for punishment and payment of compensation.
Both Congress and Left Front MLAs, however, together walked out from the Assembly opposing the Bill.
In another development, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Abdul Mannan was hospitalised after falling ill as he was being evicted by the marshall from the House as a scuffle took place between Congress MLAs and the security staff amid noisy scenes.
Mannan was suspended by Speaker Biman Banerjee as he continued his protest holding placards against the government for bringing in the Bill. Mannan termed it a "black law" and did not listen to the Speaker.
