Why Katchatheevu issue can't be reviewed: Vasan

Shipping Minister G K Vasan today lent his voice to the demand for a review of Indo-Sri Lankan agreement over the Katchatheevu issue.
"There is a feeling in the fishermen community and most of the people in Tamil Nadu, why a review cannot take place. I am only telling you the feeling of the public," the Congress leader told reporters here.
Earlier this week, AIADMK manifesto has said that it will take all necessary steps to retrieve Katchatheevu island ceded to Sri Lanka in an agreement in 1974.
The Supreme Court, had last week, granted four weeks time to DMK president M Karunanidhi to file his response to the Centre's reply that Katchatheevu could not be retrieved from Sri Lanka as pleaded by him in his writ petition.

The Centre had said Katchatheevu cannot be retrieved as no territory belonging to India was ceded nor sovereignty relinquished to Sri Lanka.
Karunanidhi in his petition had sought declaration of the agreement between India and Sri Lanka dated June 26 and 28, 1974 and the agreement dated March 23, 1976, and the related communications pertaining to such agreements, surrendering Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka, as unconstitutional and void.
Katchatheevu is an uninhabited island located about 10 miles North East of Rameswaram on the Indian side and 9 miles of south of Delft Island on the Sri Lankan side.
