The 'After Earth' star said that he learnt some great lessons of life from Avery and expressed sadness as the world lost a "truly special man".
"Some of my greatest lessons in Acting, Living and being a respectable human being came through James Avery. Every young man needs an Uncle Phil. Rest in Peace," Smith posted on Facebook.
The 45-year-old actor also posted a picture with the 'Fresh Prince' cast, featuring himself, Avery, Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton), Karyn Parsons (Hillary) and Tatyana Ali (Ashley) with the caption "This photo was the last time we were together."
Avery, who featured in many TV shows, passed away on December 31 due to complications post his heart surgery.
