Willem Dafoe in Zhang Yimou's 'Great Wall'
Zhang is set to make his English-language debut with the film, which follows an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the world's most iconic structure, reported the Wrap.
The film is expected to be the largest production ever shot entirely in China.
Production is set to begin in the spring 2015. The Universal Pictures will release the film in 3D in 2016.
