Purnima Halder from Netra area in the district gave up her three daughters -- Rama (3), Supriya (7) and Priya (9) -- for adoption through a court as she could not feed them, police said.
The 30-year-old-woman was driven out of her home by her husband, an unemployed hooch addict, when she was approached for adoption and agreed to it, the sources said.
The adoption was done through a court, after which the infant girls were handed over, they said.
Following the handover it was rumoured that the woman had sold her daughters for a paltry sum at the Diamond Harbour Railway station.
The police initially arrested the woman on August 29 and took custody of the infants and put them in a home, the sources said.
After investigation when it was established that the infants had not been sold, the woman was released, they said.
