Ganesh Prasad, Superintendent of Pavlov Hospital said that on November 27 morning, nurses on hearing a scream from the woman patient's ward rushed upstairs and found that two other patients of the same ward were beating her up.
She was rescued with injuries and taken to the Calcutta National Medical College hospital (CNMCH) where her condition deteriorated and she died yesterday, he said.
He said, "fights like this are very common among patients here. We cannot keep them in isolated rooms on humanitarian ground. We have taken several measures to keep a check on their fights but such incidents do happen", he said.
They demanded setting up of a neutral committee to inquire into the cause of her death and said that hospital authorities should have informed the police when she was beaten up by her fellow patients as claimed by them.
