Won't allow diversion of Mahadayi water by K'taka, Maha: Goa

The Goa government today told the Legislative Assembly that it will not allow diversion of Mahadayi River water by Karnataka or Maharashtra at any cost.
State Water Resources Department Minister Vinod Palyekar said during the Question Hour that diversion of water from Mahadayi tributary by Karnataka or Maharashtra will not be allowed by the Goa government.
"Diversion of water from Mahadayi basin by the State of Karnataka and Maharashtra will have adverse effect on Goa," the minister said.
The government is commitment to protect the water from being diverted and this reflects in its stand taken before the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal.

Palyekar also said that at present neither Karnataka nor Maharashtra are executing construction work on Mahadayi.
"However, so far Karnataka has done works like interconnecting conduit of about 4.5 kms, open canal of about 2.70Kms and part of head regulator," he said.
Maharashtra had commenced the work of an earthen dam on Kattika nallah, which is a tributary of Virdi river, the minister informed.
